Human Olfaction: A View from the Top

Olfaction, traditionally regarded as a ”lower” sense, provides a unique perspective on human sensory perceptual abilities. However, researchers disagree on fundamental aspects of olfactory perception. I will provide an overview of research from my team, focusing on how olfactory perception interacts with cues from ”higher” senses and from cognitive representations. Our experimental approach highlights how the olfactory system works in concert with non-olfactory systems to identify odours. I will argue that an understanding of human olfaction is incomplete without considering its interactions with ”higher” senses and cognitive representations. Considering such interactions may help develop olfactory assessments for diagnosing neuro-degenerative syndromes.
