The Ethics of Arts Funding

Many countries support arts and culture through grants to artists, protections for cultural heritage, and funding for galleries, theatres, and museums. Although these things are commonplace, they raise ethical questions that scratch at foundational issues in liberal political thought. What should get funded and why? How should concerns for fairness and favouritism constrain such decisions? And is it possible (or desirable) to democratise funding decisions? This workshop brings together experts in ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics, and archaeology to tackle these questions.
