Aegina Summer School on Social Cognition 2020 - "Social Emotions"
An Interdisciplinary Summer School
Monday 22nd June to Saturday 28th June 2020, Hotel Apollo, Aegina, Greece
We invite applications from PhD students, post-doc and young researchers to attend the Summer School on “Social Emotions “ which is jointly organized by the Institute of Philosophy, and the Warburg Institute at the University of London, the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Royal Holloway University of London, the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, and the Max Planck School of Cognition.
The Summer School will take place in the Island of Aegina, Greece (approximately 1 hour by boat from Piraeus, the port of Athens), at the wonderful location of the historic Hotel Apollo (https://www.apollohotel.gr/en ), from June 22nd to June 28th , 2020.
This Summer School builds upon the success of the previous annual summer schools on Social Cognition (2013-2019).

Programme
This year we want to examine the nature and role of social emotions in human interactions. More specifically, we want to examine :
1. Whether some emotions are intrinsically social, or more social than others (e.g. guilt, shame, envy, by contrast with happiness or sadness). Is there room for classification, for instance between altruistic vs. antagonistic social feeling, or for general rules, such as an anchoring in social comparison?
2. What are the behavioural, physiological and neural signatures of such emotions, across development and cultures: How are these emotions manifested, and perceived? Do they depend on the type of interactions that one is used to (social environment, digital vs.embodied interactions)?
3. What role do affect play in social interactions, and how to think of their function, or dysfunction : are they epiphenomenal, motivational, signalling or communicative devices? How can we tell? Do they play a role in social learning, self-regulation?
To do so, we have gathered experts from neurosciences, psychological sciences, philosophy, history and political science.
In addition, we will offer a number of specialized workshops that focus on methods and concepts in this area.

Further Information
We aim to accept a maximum number of 50 students to the Summer School
Your application will be evaluated by members of the organizing committee according to (a) how your research interests relate to the theme of the summer school as evidenced by the topics of your research, any relevant publications and past presentations, (b) the quality of the proposed abstract, and (c) the demonstration of interdisciplinary skills and interests.
The costs associated with accommodation at Hotel Apollo for six nights (check-in Monday 22nd June, check-out Sunday 28th July), lunch for all days (Tuesday to Saturday inclusive) and dinner for three nights at the Hotel Apollo of all accepted students to the summer school will be covered by the Organisers.
Accepted applicants will be required to pay a registration fee of 450 Euros to cover part of the School’s organization costs.
Accommodation will be in twin rooms occupied by two same-gender students.
The Organisers will not cover ANY travel expenses. Students should make their own travel arrangements.
The Organisers will notify successful applicants within 2 weeks after the Submission Date Deadline.
