Max Hayward

Max Hayward is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield, and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy. In 2021-22 he was a Fellow-in-Residence at the Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. 
Before that he studied for his BA and MPhil at the University of Cambridge, and did his PhD at Columbia University in New York.
Max's research is in Normative Ethics, Metaethics, Political Philosophy, Rationality, and Philosophy of Mind. He has published papers in Noûs, Mind, Philosophical Studies, The Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Topics, and Analysis, and The Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society. 


Max's essays for a broader audience have appeared in The Atlantic, The New Statesman, Aeon and The Times Literary Supplement. In 2022 Max won the American Philosophical Association’s Public Philosophy Op-Ed Prize. He is the Editor of Analysis Reviews, and an Associate Editor of The Journal of Moral Philosophy.
